There are various components which will be needed to do this, and the information on our blog will help you determine what you have and what you need to get to adapt your new equipment.
The first thing you need to do is to determine what you currently with regards to pipe material and sizes so you will be able to buy the right fittings for your system. The 2 common styles are schedule 40 PVC and barbed poly fittings. Most pool systems need to be upgraded to glued PVC, more so with above grade where you can get easy access to the pipes. Should you be doing extensive work on your equipment pad and have poly style piping in place, you need to think about re-plumbing the whole system with PVC pipes and fittings.
Pipe Sizes for
pool equipment installation
Almost every residential swimming pool comes with either 1.5″ or 2″ pipe. The older pools will have 1.5″ pipe, and newer pools have 2″ plumbing, which allows for an increase in efficiency your plumbing system. As a good reference, 2″ pipe is approximately the diameter of a soda can, and 1.5″ pipe is smaller in diameter than a stand sized can. The fittings you have, in addition to the pipe, will usually have the size printed on them when you are not sure what you currently have.
Should you upgrade the pipe to a bigger diameter?
It is not unusual to have the equipment pad plumbed with 2″ pipe as a way to improve the system flow. The friction loss of a plumbing system is reduced greatly as you increase the pipe diameter size, which means upgrading your equipment pad to a 2″ pipe will greatly improve your systems flow.
